April 24, 2014

NATCHITOCHES, LA -  “Steel Magnolias”, the hit movie filmed in Natchitoches, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. A special dedication ceremony honoring Susan Harling Robinson, the real-life character of the movie, will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the memorial garden off Pine Street in Natchitoches. A reception will follow the dedication at the Samuel Guy House located at 309 Pine Street.

"Steel Magnolias" is a true story about a Natchitoches family and close friends whose lives come together in a beauty parlor in Natchitoches. A few months after Susan's death, Robert Harling III, Susan’s brother and a Natchitoches native, penned the story in ten days. Harling’s mother, Margaret, was played by Sally Field, and his sister Susan was represented by Julia Roberts. "Steel Magnolias" was picked up as a play, but it was turned quickly into box office hit in 1989. The movie was nominated for several awards and remains beloved by millions throughout the world.

In 1985, Susan died of kidney failure. She was the mother of a two-year-old son whose name was Robert Robinson. For more information on the event, visit www.Natchitoches.com.
