Natchitoches Art Guild & Gallery

The Natchitoches Art Guild was created in 1980 as a non-profit organization designed to promote art and local artists within the historic community. In 1992, members of the Guild founded the Natchitoches Art Guild Gallery to display works by area artists.

Today, the Natchitoches Art Guild and Gallery exists as a co-operative where members volunteer to work in and maintain the space. The Gallery is funded primarily by state and local grants, membership dues, patron contributions, and a small percentage of sales.

Melrose Plantation

Marie Therese Coin-Coin, an enslaved woman, and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer, her French owner had many children together after Coin-Coin was freed. On land acquired by land grants, the Yucca House and the African House was built. The Yucca House remained the large structure on the plantation until 1833 when the main house, known as Melrose, was built.

After 1884, Melrose Plantation became a hub of art and education under the ownership of John Hampton Henry and Miss Cammie Garrett Henry. Miss Cammie, as she became known, made Melrose a haven for artists and writers.

Briarwood Nature Preserve

Walk down forest trails, savor the beauty of the Louisiana iris bog, admire the reflection pool, and enjoy the most complete botanical and wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana.

Briarwood is the birthplace and home of Caroline Dormon, a world renowned naturalist, author, artist and the first woman to be hired in the United States Forest Service. The Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve strives to carry on the work started by Miss Dormon by preserving wildflowers native to the south and educating the public on how natural forest ecosystems work.

Grand Ecore Visitor Center

From a 80 foot high bluff, the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Grand Ecore Visitor Center offers extraordinary views of Red River. The grounds are host to wildlife, cultural and historical displays of the area and waterway exploration and navigation information. A walking trail is available for visitors to get a first-hand glance at Civil War entrenchments.

U.S. Fish Hatchery

 

The Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery features sixteen tanks of native fish species highlighting river habitats from the South Eastern United States. The station is involved in spawning, hatching, and rearing young fish to restore natural populations.

The Hatchery is a warm water center concerned with spawning, hatching, and rearing young fish, called fingerlings. The fingerlings are raised to a size and age which offers them the best chance at survival in the wild.

Natchitoches Genealogy Library

The 1st floor museum is no longer open to the public. The 2nd floor houses Natchitoches Genealogy Library.  It is open Tuesday – Friday, 9am – 4pm. The library includes French conveyances, mortgages and books; Natchitoches Parish Census records 1820 – 1920; miscellaneous census records for other Louisiana parishes and states and Natchitoches Times microfilm records for March 1903 – Oct. 1996.

Los Adaes State Historic Site

Los Adaes, the symbol of New Spain in Louisiana, was once the capital of Texas and the scene of a unique cooperation among the French, the Spanish and the indigenous Native Americans.
